Neat Desktop Shortcut

Submitted by: Larry Prieto

Ok, as we all know in order to shut off our computers, it takes three steps with the mouse to achieve this function. Well here is a neat desktop shortcut that will take only a double-click with the mouse and your computer will shut down.

click on the images for a larger view

First, on a clear area of your desktop, right-click your mouse and you should have the following screen:

Now, position the mouse over the word New and you will get this screen:

Then put your pointer over the word Shortcut and left-click your mouse once:

In the Command Line box, enter one of these as the command:

bulletUse this command if your operating system is Windows 95, 98, or Me:

C:\WINDOWS\RUNDLL.EXE user.exe,exitwindows

bulletUse this command if your operating system is Windows XP:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\shutdown.exe -s -t 03

For advanced XP users:

In the Target box, append the command line switch -l (to log off), -s (to shut down), or -r (to reboot).

If you also add the switch –t xx (where xx is a number of seconds), Shutdown.exe will display a warning and count down the specified number of seconds before activating. Without the -t xx switch, the default count is 30 seconds. You can specify a comment to be displayed with the warning by adding the switch -c "Your text". The countdown behavior is particularly useful if the shutdown program is launched through the Scheduled Tasks applet. For example, a library computer might be scheduled to shut down 10 minutes before closing, with a 60-second warning. Once the countdown has begun, the only way to stop it is to launch the program again with the -a (for abort) switch on its command line.

Shutdown.exe is included with Windows XP, and you can add it to Windows NT 4.0 or 2000 via the corresponding Resource Kit.

It is important to type the commands with the appropriate letter case as in the above examples. If the C: drive is not your local hard drive, then replace "C" with the correct letter of the hard drive.

At this time click on next and you will see the following screen. Type in what ever you would like to name the new shortcut icon and left-click Finish:

You now have a desktop shortcut that will shut down your computer when you double click it.  I've used the name Shutdown for my new shortcut icon:
