Fractures and Dislocations — Splinting the Upper Leg or Hip

CAUTION: Do not splint an injured upper leg or hip unless you have to move the victim. Do not tie the splint in place over the break.

  1. Locate two long boards. One should reach from the victim's armpit to the heel, and the other from the groin to the heel.

  2. Pad the boards with blankets or towels. Then place the boards with the padded side against the victim's body and leg.

  3. Tie the boards in place at the chest, waist, groin, thigh, knee and ankle.
