First Aid

Cardiac and Respiratory Arrest — Infant CPR

  1. Establish that the victim is unresponsive.

  2. If someone else is available, have them call for help.

  3. Open the airway by tilting the head up.

  4. Look, listen and feel for breathing.

  5. If the victim is not breathing, give two slow breaths, covering the infant's nose and mouth with your mouth. (In adult CPR, cover only the mouth.) Watch the chest rise and allow for exhalation between breaths.

  6. Check for a pulse on the inside of the infant's upper arm, near the elbow.

  7. If there is no pulse, place two fingers in the center of the infant's chest, one finger width below the nipple line. Give cycles of five chest compressions followed by one slow breath. Continue this cycle for about one minute.

  8. Check for a pulse.

  9. If you are alone, call for help.

  10. If there is no pulse, continue the cycles of five chest compressions and one slow breath.
