Heatstroke and Heat Exhaustion

Important!
bulletIf you suspect that the victim is suffering from heatstroke or if the victim is unconscious, call 911 or your emergency number.

 

Heatstroke Symptoms
bulletBody temperature above 102° F
bulletFlushed, dry, hot skin
bulletConstricted pupils
bulletConfusion
bulletRapid pulse
bulletSeizures
bulletUnconsciousness

 

Heat Exhaustion Symptoms
bulletCool, clammy skin
bulletExcessive perspiration
bulletDilated pupils
bulletRapid pulse
bulletHeadache
bulletNausea or vomiting
bulletAbdominal or limb cramps
bulletDizziness
bulletUnconsciousness

 

First Aid for Heatstroke
  1. Quickly move the victim to a cooler site.
  2. Cool the victim. Place cool, wet cloths on the forehead and torso, or wrap the victim in wet towels or sheets. Fan him with an electric fan, a hair dryer set on cold, or your hand. CAUTION: Do not use an alcohol rub to cool the victim. Do not give him anything to eat or drink.

 

First Aid for Heat Exhaustion
  1. Move the victim to a cooler site.
  2. Have the victim sit or lie down, and elevate his feet.
  3. Cool the victim. Place cool, wet cloths on the forehead and torso, or wrap the victim in wet towels or sheets. Fan the victim with an electric fan, a hair dryer set on cold, or your hand. Do not use an alcohol rub to cool the victim.
  4. Give the conscious victim a cool drink. If the victim is conscious and is able to swallow and breathe without difficulty, give him salt water (1 teaspoon salt mixed with 1 quart water) to sip. CAUTION: Do not force the victim to drink. Do not give him anything that is alcoholic or caffinated.

     

  5. If the victim's condition does not improve, call 911 or your emergency number.
