First Aid

Cardiac and Respiratory Arrest — Child CPR

  1. Establish that the victim is unresponsive.

  2. If someone else is available, have them call for help.

  3. Open the airway by tilting the head back, unless you think the victim may have a neck injury.

  4. Look, listen and feel for breathing.

  5. If the victim is not breathing, pinch the nostrils closed, and give two slow breaths. Watch the chest rise and allow for exhalation between breaths.

  6. Check for a pulse at the carotid artery: Gently press two fingers, not your thumb, in the depression on the side of the victim's neck next to the Adam's apple.

  7. If there is no pulse, place one hand in the middle of the sternum, give five chest compressions and one slow breath. Continue this cycle for about one minute.

  8. Check for a pulse.

  9. If you are alone, call for help.

  10. If there is no pulse, continue the cycles of five chest compressions and one slow breath.
