Fractures and Dislocations — Placing an Arm in a Sling

  1. Locate a large piece of cloth or a long-sleeved shirt. If you're using a piece of cloth, fold the cloth in half to form a triangle. (If you're using a shirt, do not fold.)
  2. Position the injured arm across the chest, thumb up.
  3. Slide the cloth between the victim's injured arm and body with the long side of the cloth or the top of the shirt toward the uninjured arm.
  4. Pull the top end of the cloth up the front of the victim's body. Then pull it alongside the victim's neck on the uninjured side.
  5. Fold the lower half of the cloth up over the injured arm so that this end of the cloth comes up to the victim's neck. Then pull the end behind the victim's neck to the uninjured side.
  6. Tie the sling over the shoulder on the uninjured side.
  7. Fold over any extra material that is behind the elbow, and pin it in place. Make sure the sling is snug but not tight.
