First Aid

Cardiac and Respiratory Arrest — Adult CPR

  1. Establish that the victim is unresponsive.

  2. Call for help immediately.

  3. Open the airway by tilting the head back, unless you think the victim may have a neck injury.

  4. Look, listen and feel for breathing.

  5. If the victim is not breathing, pinch the nostrils closed, and give two slow breaths. Watch the chest rise and allow for exhalation between breaths.

  6. Check for a pulse at the carotid artery: Gently press two fingers, not your thumb, in the depression on the side of the victim's neck next to the Adam's apple.

  7. If there is no pulse, place your hands on the middle of the sternum and give cycles of 15 chest compressions followed by two slow breaths.

  8. After four cycles, check for a pulse.

  9. If there is no pulse, continue the cycle beginning with 15 chest compressions.
