| Cardiac
and Respiratory Arrest — Adult CPR
- Establish that the victim is unresponsive.
- Call for help immediately.
- Open the airway by tilting the head back, unless you
think the victim may have a neck
injury.
- Look, listen and feel for breathing.
- If the victim is not breathing, pinch the nostrils
closed, and give two slow breaths. Watch the chest
rise and allow for exhalation between breaths.
- Check for a pulse at the carotid artery: Gently
press two fingers, not your thumb, in the depression on
the side of the victim's neck next to the Adam's apple.
- If there is no pulse, place your hands on the middle
of the sternum and give cycles of 15 chest compressions
followed by two slow breaths.
- After four cycles, check for a pulse.
- If there is no pulse, continue the cycle beginning
with 15 chest compressions.
